The producer and director of Shazam! suggest that you stick around once the credits start rolling.
t’s now assumed that every superhero movie (and most other movies, in fact) will have some sort of additional scene either tucked away in the middle of the end credits or at the very tail of the film, and the upcoming Shazam! from Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Entertainment is no exception.
For a time, in fact, it was rumored that the end credits of Shazam! would feature an appearance from Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Black Adam, the title superhero’s most well-known villain whose own movie has been in development for a while. While producer Peter Safran told us that that’s not the case (he called the speculation a “complete myth," in fact), he does acknowledge that Shazam! will come complete with a bonus scene.
“It's probably the same decision making that one has on all of these movies,” said Safran during a get-together with Den of Geek and other outlets to show off some extended footage from the movie. “Which is: what's going to be fun, what's going to be satisfying for the audience, what's going to be a nice punctuation mark at the end of the movie?”
He added, “We had a lot of options. I think we ended up with something good.”
Of course Safran and director David F. Sandberg were not ready to reveal just what the bonus sequence includes, but the inevitable question is: will it connect 14-year-old orphan Billy Batson (Asher Angel) and his magically super-powered alter ego Shazam (Zachary Levi) to the larger DC film universe?
That entity is evolving from a fully shared realm into a more loosely connected one, but Sandberg said that his movie does acknowledge that other superheroes exist. “Absolutely, yeah,” he says. “They live in a world where these things are real, which is also fun to explore, because we don't really see that aspect of it, like how would pop culture -- will they still have the toys, the action figures that we have? They do. It's just based on real things.”
In addition to Levi and Angel, Shazam! also stars Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer, Djimon Hounsou, Grace Fulton, and more. The movie is out in theaters April 5.
